January 13, 2001-- Cole Update

(This update was written by Cole's mother - Kim Burgett)

Cole is doing great. We have gone from laying complacent to rolling off the couch (just once). Not on a regular basis.

I feel Cole has decided to have a little attitude. He enjoys laughing and fussing and he has selected from 2:00 am to 7:00 am as his time to wake up and exercise his attitude. I will say this is OK with us because the Doctor had told us that it would be six to eight weeks before we would see change but it has only been four weeks and the changes are already great.

Cole is talking more and yelling and laughing a lot. We can tell that he is focusing on objects and paying attention to his own hands and feet. There are other neurological changes that might seem small but are huge for us. Just to be able to stick his tongue out at you is one of the hardest of all neurological things to do, and believe me, he does this very well.

Cole is now being fitted for a Supine Standing Machine to give weight baring for his hips, knees and feet. This will help his sockets and joints to mature by placing weight on them. His feet will have temporary braces to keep them from rolling inward but only for a while.

We have been told to cancel the wheelchair and work with his full potential. They do however, have a chair for him to use as a loaner. The only thing is that it used to be a little girls chair and it is pink. I guess we could stick a bow in his hair and call him Colleen. Ha Ha... JUST KIDDING! So if you see us running around town or church in a pink chair, think nothing of it.

Thank You Again for the donations. We are planing and Praying for another trip in April or May to finish the treatments.

Keep Praying and Keep the Faith

Love Kim

Note from Stephen:

Let's all continue to pray for Cole and, if possible, make a contribution to help offset the cost of the treatments that Cole needs. I saw on the news this morning that people in the Dallas area were making cash donations to help pay the medical costs for a dog that had been violently abused. One man was reported to have dropped off $1200 in cash. People indeed are kind and this type of response is common. How much more should we care for a baby needing help as Cole does. Mike and Kim have given of themselves for others and it is my hope that people will be touched and contributions will be made just as was done for this little puppy.

December 11 Update

Mike, Kim and Cole are now back from Florida--Welcome Home Cole!

I was privileged to hold Cole yesterday during Church and I had to hold on tight to keep him from wiggling out of my arms. He was very active-moving his arms and legs and turning his head back and forth just soaking in the sites and sounds. I saw many changes including little things like pulling his foot away when he was tickled and being much more alert. Cole is waking up to the sounds and actions that are going on around him and this is a miracle that we can give God credit for.

Each of you that have been praying for Cole and have been helping with contributions have all played a part in this miracle in progress. We need to continue to pray for Cole and the Burgett's still need our financial help. The doctor has recommended another couple of weeks of treatments to take place after the first of the year. Please help Mike and Kim offset the one month loss in income and the cost of these treatments by continuing to make your loving contributions. They were able to purchase an additional two weeks of treatments due to the communities help so far but the account was almost drained when they made last weeks payment. Stay tuned for upcoming fun ways to raise additional funds for Cole's treatments. See below for Abram's Centre Bank's mailing address or stop by the bank if you would like to make a direct contribution.

In awe of God's great work,

Stephen

Wal-Mart Raffle is a Huge Success!

Congratulations to the two winners of the Wal-Mart Employee assisted raffle that was conducted to benefit the Cole Burgett Fund. Kathy Clement's ticket was drawn as the winner of the horse that had been donated by Glenn Heights Councilman Raul Acosta. The winning ticket for the Wal-Mart 25 inch RCA Television was purchased by Dave Cobb.

On behalf of all the Volunteers that are involved in raising funds for the Cole Burgett Fund, I want to thank all the Lancaster Wal-Mart employees for their help in selling raffle tickets and for their help in making the community aware of Cole's Burgett's need for assistance.

Between November 7, 2000 when the Wal-Mart project was initiated, and the drawing that occurred last night over $3,000 was raised for the Cole Burgett Fund. We are excited to learn that the project is being submitted for Wal-Mart's Matching Grant Program by the Lancaster Wal-Mart! Under this matching program, local community Wal-Mart stores can match employee projects such as this up to $2,000.

I along with the Burgett's and the Glenn Heights Volunteer Fire Department want to say THANK YOU to Lancaster Wal-Mart and their employees!

Update on Cole (12/03/2000)

We learned last night the the Burgetts will be returning home late this week with a little boy that is much more active, alert, and responsive than he was when they left for the treatments in Florida. We rejoice and praise God for this good report and we look forward to seeing the progress with our own eyes.

Please continue to pray for the Burgett's as they make this long trip and for God to continue to cause Cole's condition to improve. Please also continue to remember the Burgett's with financial support because they do have some debts to repay as well as additional treatments to undergo after the first of the year.

Stay tuned for additional details as we receive them!

A MOTHER'S PRAYER

by Cole's mother, Kim

He is precious, He is love,
He is God sent from above.
Head full of hair Ten fingers, ten toes,
He seems so perfect, God only knows.

The problems started, the trips we took,
To give another Dr. one more look.
The test they ran, the blood they drew,
We had no warning, not even a clue.

We waited for results, we needed to hear,
Yes, it was our biggest fear.
His little brain just wasn't right,
Something about it caused seizures all night.

My little boy is not developing well,
The Doctors are telling us that they cannot tell.
His brain is not the size it should be,
They think it might be deteriorating you see.

Most people are hoping for a lawyer or Doctor for their child to be.
I just hope my child sees three.

Comfort us, yes, I'll tell you the way,
All I ask of you is please pray.
Pray for our son, our only child,
Pray that his condition is very mild.

God is in our presence, I can feel it.
I ask in Jesus name,
I pray that you will heal it.

Amen

A Message from Governor George W. Bush.

"During the opening months of my presidential campaign, I have traveled our country and my heart has been warmed. My experiences have reinvigorated my faith in the greatness of Americans. They have reminded me that societies are renewed from the bottom up, not the top down. Everywhere I go, I see people of love and faith, taking time to help a neighbor in need... These people and thousands like them are the heart and soul and greatness of America. And I want to do my part. I am running for President because I believe America must seize this moment, America must lead. We must give our prosperity a greater purpose, a purpose of peace and freedom and hope. We are a great nation of good and loving people. And together, we have a charge to keep." For a Contuation of Bush's Comments-Click here.

Emergency! Local Life Saving Family Now Needs Our Help!

Updated 11/6/2000

For years now, when people all over Glenn Heights have dialed 911, they found the first person to arrive at their door or at the scene of an accident has been Glenn Heights Fire Chief Mike Burgett. Chief Mike Burgett, who is both a paramedic and a certified fireman, has personally helped to save many lives and has trained many other individuals in emergency life saving procedures and other property saving fire department procedures. As the Chief of our Volunteer Fire Department, Chief Burgett has sacrificed to provide life and property protection to everyone in Glenn Heights and surrounding areas even though the City could not yet afford to pay for this type of service.

Right by Chief Burgett's side at many of the emergency calls has been his wife Kim Burgett. Kim, who is also a trained EMT Medic, currently serves as the President of the Glenn Heights Volunteer Fire Department and also heads up the City's Junior Fire Marshall Program. Through this program, Kim has taught safety and prevention to elementary students in both the DeSoto and Red Oak Independent School Districts and she has led the students to participate in community service activities as well. Both Mike and Kim have given of themselves for this City and the surrounding areas through their work in the local schools, public service, and emergency life saving training and through actual emergency responses when needed.

Now, in a reversal of roles, it is Mike and Kim and their young son Cole that need our help.

On May 30, 1999, Mike and Kim were blessed with the birth of their son Cole. Cole was a large baby and it was a difficult birth. After a few weeks, he began having seizures. Because of their medical training, Mike and Kim were especially suited to provide the type care that Cole needed. They have been able to administer shots, recognize and treat seizures and most of all to provide the healthy loving home that any child would need despite the medical difficulties.

Cole has seen several specialists and undergone tests that have shown him to delayed in his development, leaving the hope of a normal healthy life upon full brain development. Basically, I'm told, that the blood vessels in Coles brain have not developed as well as necessary to bring the much needed supply of oxygen to promote growth. I'm also told that there is a relatively simple procedure that has been successful in promoting this blood vessel growth in other children and this procedure is immediately available to Cole. That is where our help is needed.

The simple procedure involves placing Cole into a "Hyperbaric" Chamber twice a day for several days. While in this chamber, Cole would breathe 100% Oxygen. A combination of increased air pressure and oxygen promotes blood vessel development which aids ultimately in brain development. This type of treatment has been available for all types of vessel and wound healing procedures for decades but has only recently been used in trials for children with Cole's symptoms. Therefore, it is deemed experimental and it does not appear that their insurance will cover the actual treatment.

Cole is now 17 months old and it is imperative that any treatment that could that could actually aid in brain development be done as soon as possible. While Cole would be added to a list to join an experimental program in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth Area, waiting could take as long as two years. Mike and Kim feel that Cole needs more immediate attention and we should agree. They have decided to take a step of faith and go to Florida and begin treatment as early as Monday, November 6th.

"Cole's case is a difficult one" according to Dr. Mark Towns, Cole's Pediatrician. "Cole has been evaluated by several specialists and no clear cause for his developmental delay and seizures have been identified. We do know however that his brain is underdeveloped and if hyperbaric oxygen treatments might help, they certainly should be considered." Dr. Towns also emphasized how well Mike and Kim have met the challenge of Cole's care. "They have demonstrated an unwavering dedication to getting the best care for Cole as well as certainty in God's provision for that care."

Cole's first month of treatment will most likely cost about $6,000 including two treatments a day, six days a week, for a month. The Burgett's insurance will pay for pre-treatment and post-treatment testing and might cover some other expenses but this cannot be counted on at this time. Mike and Kim plan to spend the entire month of November with Cole at the Hyperbaric treatment Center in Florida and everyday expenses like food and lodging could become very difficult. But who would allow their own child to suffer when there is a chance, as evidenced by other children that have had these treatments, that Cole's condition could be greatly improved even to the point of a complete recovery. (See Case Study Links Below)

How can you help? First, and most importantly, please join in praying regularly for Cole, Mike and Kim that God will help Cole's brain to begin to grow and function normally. We know that God is able to do miraculous things as evidenced by the many lives that He has touched since we first learned of Cole's difficulties. No two people have grown closer to God because of Cole's illness than Mike and Kim themselves. Please pray that people throughout Glenn Heights and the area will soon learn of God's ability to heal through watching what God does for Cole.

Second, please consider making a financial gift for Cole Burgett that would be used first to offset medical expenses and second, to help the Burgett's with living expenses during the treatment periods. If you can help with an immediate donation, please mail or drop off your donation to: The Cole Burgett Fund.

Or, Drop off your donation to the Bank at 119 W. Ovilla Road in Glenn Heights.

It is my hope that many can give immediate cash donations so that Mike and Kim do not have to worry with money issues as they try to do what is best for their son Cole. Others may be able to plan and organize future efforts that would help in offsetting the long-term costs of additional treatments after this first month proves to be successful. The citizens of Glenn Heights as well as the surrounding areas of DeSoto, Ovilla, Red Oak, Lancaster, Cedar Hill, and Oak Leaf have all have benefitted from having Mike and Kim Burgett volunteering in our communities. Let's rally in this effort to return the love and support afforded us as a community by this very giving couple by helping them and their baby in their time of need.

May God demonstrate His Blessings through us all,

Stephen Pape
